High school teacher accused of sleeping with student

On Nov. 3, a Florida teacher was taken into custody after she was reportedly caught having sex with a student. The 29-year-old high school teacher reportedly also resigned from her position.

She was accused of having a student visit her apartment in Tampa on Nov. 1 where they allegedly had consensual sex. The former teacher then reportedly sent multiple text messages later the same evening admitting to sleeping with a student. Investigators than talked to the student who was allegedly involved and he confirmed that he did sleep with the former teacher.

The former teacher was ultimately charged with two counts of sexual activity with a minor. She posted $30,000 and was released from jail early Nov. 3. The school stated that the administration was working with law enforcement during the investigation of the incident.

When a person is accused of sexual offenses, he or she could face serious consequences depending on a variety of factors. In some cases, the person could be facing a lengthy jail or prison sentence depending on the act for which he or she was convicted. If a minor was involved in the sexual activity or the person had a history of previous criminal activity, the punishments could be even more severe. In many sexual assault cases, the person will be required to register as a sex offender after the prison sentence ends.

A criminal law attorney may assist with defending a person who has been accused of sexual assault or other sex offenses involving a minor. Fighting the charges may mean demonstrating that the prosecution's evidence is not ironclad and that there is significant doubt in the case. Further, the attorney may show that the evidence was illegally obtained.
