Annual report shows drop in Florida crime

Last week the Florida Department of Law Enforcement released its Annual Uniform Crime Report for 2012. This yearly report tracks different kinds of criminal offenses in Florida, using that data to highlight statewide trends and determine what kinds of crimes are being committed where. This year's report showed that, overall, crime has declined since last year.

A different kind of life sentence for young sex offenders: pt. 2

In our last post we discussed the release of a recent report by the advocacy group Human Rights Watch. The report focuses on the severe implications of registering children as sex offenders for offenses committed as children. We introduced one case, where a young man's has effectively been ruined because of an offense committed when he was only 11 years old.

A different kind of life sentence for young sex offenders: pt. 1

Last year the Supreme Court of the United States issued a ruling in Miller v. Alabama, holding that it is unconstitutional to impose mandatory life sentences without parole for juvenile offenders. Across the country state courts and legislators are working out ways to reconcile their laws with the Supreme Court decision, treating juveniles more fairly in the criminal justice system.
