5 Floridians charged with conspiring to distribute heroin

According to the United States Department of Justice, five people have been charged with conspiracy to distribute thousands of portions of fentanyl and heroin in Tampa. The federal indictment against the five was unsealed on April 19.

The indictment charges the five people with conspiring to distribute 100 grams of a fentanyl analog, 400 grams of fentanyl and in excess of a kilogram of heroin. The five people who were charged included a 32-year-old woman and four men who are ages 34,40,60 and 61. If the five are convicted as they have been charged, they could face up to life in prison.

The indictment came after an investigation that was conducted by the Tampa Police Department, Florida Highway Patrol and Drug Enforcement Administration. The five allegedly participated in the distribution conspiracy from June 2017 until Feb. 2018. Sources do not indicate if any of the defendants have bonds set or where they are being held in custody.

Drug crimes can lead to serious consequences. When there are charges of drug distribution of large amounts of heroin, fentanyl or other dangerous drugs, alleged offenders might face federal indictments that carry potential sentences of life in prison. People who are facing serious drug charges may want to retain experienced criminal defense lawyers as soon as possible. If they are facing federal charges, they might want to find drug defense lawyers who are experienced in handling federal drug cases. Attorneys could negotiate with the prosecutors to secure pleas to lesser charges or capped sentences. They may also be able to win dismissals in some cases if the investigations were conducted improperly.
