Teen accuses registered sex offender of sexual battery

Tallahassee police officers searched the home of a 66-year-old man after arresting him. They were investigating the sexual battery accusations of a Florida teenager who said that he took nude photographs of her. The activities had allegedly gone on during the past year. Inside the man's home, police looked for evidence but failed to find any printed or digital pictures of the young woman.

Man pleads guilty to securities fraud charge

A former Florida day trader pleaded guilty on Dec. 11 to one count of conspiracy to commit securities fraud and one count of securities fraud after admitting to playing a role in a ring to steal confidential details from investment banks. According to authorities, the stolen confidential information was used for the purpose of helping clients make trades.

Teacher charged after selling marijuana to middle school students

On Dec. 8, a substitute teacher was taken into custody and held on a $90,500 bond after she allegedly sold marijuana to two middle school students in Florida. Hendry County Sheriff's deputies reportedly set up the sting operation that led to criminal allegations against the teacher after the students admitted to smoking the drug. Authorities say that the 35-year-old woman is now facing a number of drug-related charges in connection with the case.

Increased enforcement efforts for opioids, opiates and heroin

Addiction to potentially deadly drugs has reached epidemic proportions in the United States. 2016 is the first year on record where the number of drug overdose deaths exceeded gun fatalities. Although data isn't in for 2017, there's little doubt the death toll will surpass that of 2016. States, communities and even national health organizations keep trying to address this ever-spreading issue with little luck.

Sex offender faces human trafficking charges in Florida

Charges have been filed and additional charges are pending in the case of a Florida man who allegedly held two women in a storage locker and forced them to prostitute themselves. According to media sources, the 41-year-old man collected money from the male clients for whom he arranged sexual encounters and then used the money to buy drugs. A registered sex offender, the man was taken into police custody on Nov. 16 following an investigation.

Florida resident to pay $45 million and serve 80 months

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, a Miami business owner will have to repay the federal government $45 million and serve 80 months in jail for her role in a fraudulent Medicare billing scheme. The 59-year-old woman entered a guilty plea and was sentenced in federal court.
