Criminal defense: while specific outcomes are not guaranteed, zealous advocacy is

Dec 4, 2014 | Criminal Defense

Readers who have visited our website know that we pride ourselves on our commitment to providing our clients with the best possible criminal defense in their case. What this means is that our job is to provide our clients with the resources and advocacy they need to minimize the consequences of criminal charges.

What this does not mean, though, is that we can guarantee a specific outcome in any given case. This is an important point, because legal advertising can sometimes border on making promises to defendants that simply cannot be guaranteed. That just isn’t how the legal system works.

A criminal defense attorney has the special task of acting as an advocate for an individual accused of criminal behavior. This relationship involves duties of loyalty, confidentiality, and the duty to act as a zealous advocate. To this end, criminal defense attorneys utilize their knowledge of the law and their ability to navigate the criminal process to ensure that prosecutors are held to their full burden of proof, to take advantage of the protections available, and to advocate for the interests of their clients.

All of this is critical in ensuring the best outcome for criminal defendants, but in no way does it ensure a particular result for defendants in any given case. The outcome of criminal cases ultimately depends on the facts of the case and the applicable law, along with other factors that are not completely in a criminal defense attorney’s control.

All that being said, it is worth repeating that working with an experienced attorney is indispensable to ensuring the best possible outcome in a criminal case, particularly in cases where a lot is at stake.
