Three Florida pharmacies targeted by DEA for prescription drugs

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration is currently conducting a probe of three Walgreens pharmacies in Florida following allegations that the pharmacies are connected to diversion of prescription drugs for illegal use.

The pharmacies were issued orders to show cause, which requires them to prove why they should be allowed to keep their operating licenses. The stores, which are located in Fort Fierce, Hudson and Oviedo, are still allowed to handle the substances at issue until further action is taken.

The pharmacies have 30 days to submit a written request to the DEA for an administrative hearing. At the hearing, their rights to sell controlled substances will be questioned and debated.

This is the latest in a long string of DEA actions directed at diversion of prescription drugs. Florida is known as a national hub for the illegal use of these substances and the DEA has focused great effort here.

This probe illustrates that law enforcement officials don't only go after individuals for offenses involving controlled substances. Pharmacies, medical providers and distributors may also be targeted. Professionals who are charged with such prescription drug offenses may face traditional criminal penalties in addition to measures like professional license suspension or termination.

If you are facing criminal allegations or charges, whether as a business entity or an individual, it is essential to speak with an experienced criminal defense attorney. They can help you protect your constitutional rights in the criminal justice system, work with you to build a strong defense and try to achieve the best possible outcome in your case.
