Florida outlaws 22 new synthetic drugs

The Florida Attorney General has released an emergency order widening the scope of Florida's laws against synthetic drugs. The order outlaws 22 chemicals found in these drugs, which have been widely available for legal sale in smoke shops, convenience stories and online.

The order lists these substances as Schedule 1 drugs, which makes it a third-degree felony to sell, deliver, purchase, possess or manufacture them. Commonly called "spice," "K2" or "bath salts," these drugs have been linked to serious adverse effects like psychotic episodes, hallucinations and seizures.

Charges stemming from the possession or consumption of these drugs may be a new phenomenon but that doesn't make them any less serious. Failing to comply with this order could result in felony charges.

Because retailers have previously been able to obtain and sell these chemicals legally, they may need help disposing of them in a safe, lawful way - unless they want to face enforcement action. They should contact law enforcement officials for help with disposal to ensure they are not vulnerable to criminal proceedings.

Individuals who possess these substances have also been advised to get in touch with the police about safe disposal but it may be wise to talk to a lawyer first. They can advise you of your rights to ensure that trying to do the right thing has no adverse effects.

If you are state or federal drug charges, consider speaking with a criminal defense attorney right away. They can help you fight any charges while seeking the best possible outcome in your case, be it a lesser sentence, plea deal or complete dismissal of charges.
