President Obama commutes more sentences for nonviolent drug offenders

Readers who have been paying attention to issues in federal drug policy know that significant changes have occurred in recent years. Among these changes is a movement toward greater lenience for nonviolent drug offenders. Earlier this month, President Obama took another step in this direction by commutating criminal sentences for a total of 46 inmates. Here in Florida, two inmates had life sentences commuted.

As we’ve noted before on this blog, federal authorities are keen to investigate and prosecute health care fraud because of the significant amount of public dollars routinely lost to fraud schemes. An equally important reason for the investigative and prosecutorial zeal against health care fraudsters is that doctors who engage in these schemes can end up putting patients at risk.

Florida readers have all heard about the ongoing legal issues surrounding faulty ignition switches in some General Motors vehicles, a problem which has cause over 100 deaths. Much of the litigation the company has faced in connection with the defect has involved product liability issues, but prosecutors are now apparently considering whether to charge GM under federal mail and wire fraud statutes.
